Too Many Books? Pish Posh!

Is it possible to have too many books? The Friends Fall Used Book Sale is just around the corner, so it’s a timely question. Let’s ask some passersby …

Buffalo Chips

I can’t say much ’bout too many books. But I sure as shootin’ are haulin’ too many buffalo chips. Ain’t nobody toll me pioneerin’ were gonna be so dang smelly!

We both love books and more books. A novelette by Daphne du Maurier entitled “The Birds” is a particular favorite. We disagree, however, on a fondness for birds. I wonder why?

I don’t know about you, but that wasn’t very helpful. Let’s ask one more person. He’s John Q. Benham of Avoca, Indiana. His private collection of books numbers over 1.5 million. As they have filled up his house, most of them must be kept in his six-car garage, a two-story building, and piled under tarpaulin outdoors.

John may or may not be in this picture. If he’s not, I hope he’s heading over to Ridgefield for our used book sale next week!

So, People, it looks as if the majority of people we spoke with believe that you can’t have too many books.

It’s a good thing that the Friend’s Fall Used Book Sale is coming up soon! Here are the details:

Thursday (10/18) from 6 to 8 pm: Members-Only Appreciation Reception and Early Access to the sale. If you want to become a new member or are renewing your membership, fill out the membership form in advance or at the door. We’ll have delicious treats for you to savor while you browse the tables and shelves packed with books, two raffles for a free bag of books, and many great door prizes. The Reception is in the small room of the Community Center and the used book sale is in the large room.

Friday (10/19) from 11 am to 7 pm: The sale is open to members and the public. Anyone may still join the Friends! This year, we are having a “Marketplace” in the small room of the Community Center (where you will be paying for your purchases). You will find a variety of A+ gift items for that special “someone” for the holidays (or any day).

Saturday (10/20) from 11 am to 3: pm: Same as Friday, only the hours are shorter. There may be a special sale the last hour. You’ll have to come on down to find out!

As always, we appreciate everyone who comes along and buys “merch” that helps fund our current library and goes towards the building project for our new library.

We also are in need of helping hands to set up before, staff, and clean up after this major event. If you have even an hour or two and feel like making a difference in your community, please contact Jeanne at (360) 887-2579 or jeanne.androvich@mindspring.com

We’d love you to do some things with us!

What’s so special about May 5th?

The first Saturday of May every year is celebrated around the world as Free Comic Book Day. On this day, participating speciality comic book stores give out free comics to anyone visiting their stores.

Could this be the inspiration for the National Enquirer? You never know. Well, you can know if you look it up…

But that’s not why May 5th is special in RIDGEFIELD.

Herb Day is an unofficial holiday annually celebrated on the first Saturday of May.

Now, wait a doggone minute! Chiapet herb thingies are supposed to grow, not growl!

But that’s not why May 5th is special in RIDGEFIELD.

The reason we’re making a big fuss over May 5th, the first Saturday in May, is that the Friends of Ridgefield Community Library will be among the happy vendors at Overlook Park from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

This year, we have two (count ’em, 2) tents under which you’ll find a variety of used books for children, teens and adults in many genres plus audio books and little gifties you or someone you know might enjoy.

All books are $1.00 or less!

Come to browse, learn about what’s happening at the library or what the Friends are up to these days. Rain or shine, there will be plenty of room under our tents to get out from under the weather.

Remember, ALL proceeds go toward supporting current and future needs of YOUR library.

And, if you have even ONE HOUR of SPARE TIME…

We REALLY need volunteers to help us with this and future events. PLEASE consider volunteering even if it’s just once for an hour on Saturday. Your help makes us and the library more effective at providing you with what you need and want. It’s an all-for-one and one-for-all kind of thing, you know?

The Friends will be among the many booths at Overlook Park during Ridgefield’s First Saturdays from May through October.

Hang on! While I’ve got you, let me remind you of some events that are coming up really quickly. I know, I know. Tom, the cat who happens to my hubby, says I’m always putting my paw in where it doesn’t belong, but I know purrfectly well that we call can use a little scratch on the backside to remind us of what’s happening in the sandbox. Am I right?

Just a quick reminder:

Friday, April 13th, 4-5 pm at the library: Welcome reception for our new librarian, Jessica, hosted by the Friends. Light refreshments served. Open to the public.

Saturday, April 14th, 11 am-1:30 pm in the large room at the Community Center: Public Forum about the possible location of the new library hosted by the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District. Information will be given and discussion from the audience is encouraged. Friends will provide light refreshments. Open to the public.
